Phase Shifter (2021)

Sound, light and MOVEMENT in 3D space

Phase Shifter (2021) is an immense kinetic sculptural sound and light composition by artist group Squidsoup.

It is an ever-shifting audio-visual landscape defined by the interplay of a line of 40 moving sound and light sources, together creating an immersive and transcendent dynamic soundscape.

Watching the work, we begin to lose our bearings, allowing ourselves to be drawn into the undulating form as sound light and flowing movement beguile us, creating an almost trance-like de-coupling from physical space.

Phase Shifter – an immersive, dynamic, audiovisual work by artist group Squidsoup.

The piece combines bespoke wifi controlled audiovisual orbs with twin motor winds (also made by us and wifi controlled), giving the possibility of movement in two dimensions. Forty such units were arranged in a row, creating a massive dynamic snaking form, controlled in real time.

This is a document of the first showing of the project, at the Factory Cooperage Shed, Royal William Yard, Plymouth (UK), in May-June 2021.

Project commissioned by Real Ideas Organisation.
