SQUIDSOUP / ANT ROWE / RORY THOMAS-LAWTON

Recorded 2 July 2025 at Squidsoup studio (UK)
Mixed February/May 2026

Embodying feelings of fragility, confusion, lack of control and random unpredictability, Surface Tension moves through a series of amorphous spaces, attempting to recall and recreate the experience of returning to consciousness from a near-death experience. The work was recorded shortly after artist Ant Rowe had a heart attack and cardiac arrest, leaving him unresponsive with no pulse for several minutes before being resuscitated with CPR and a defibrillator. This is his interpretation of that journey.

The recording was made to form the basis of an art installation using Squidsoup’s trademark combination of light, sound, space and technology. This may yet come to pass, but we felt the piece was interesting enough to stand on its own. We hope you agree.
Squidsoup, May 2026
We are planning a Bandcamp release and limited first edition of individually numbered cassettes.
Squidsoup – pioneers in the use of light, sound, technology and space to create new kinds of immersive experience. Their work questions our understanding of presence and physicality. They use digitally controlled media to alter and augment physical spaces, to compose perception-altering journeys of the mind. SQDX is an ongoing series of their sonic explorations.
Ant Rowe – artist, musician, sound designer. Ant uses sound, light, technology and physical space to create atmospheres and feelings, hoping to shift audiences’ perspectives to see the world in a new light. He founded Squidsoup in 1997 to create new forms of experience using digital media.
Rory Thomas -Lawton is a music producer, DJ and VJ with 15 years experience of music production. He has worked with labels including Brownswood Records and led electronic music collectives to perform at festivals such as Boomtown and Womad. He has more recently composed soundtracks for some of Squidsoup’s international artworks.
Surface Tension began with a live recording of electric upright bass played through Soma Labs’ Cosmos/Drifting Memory Station. Side A concatenates the four sketches into a single work, with only reverse reverb added. Side B deconstructs and rebuilds the recording, highlighting different aspects of the piece, and pointing to a different path through the work.
