Infinite
Immersive randomised spatial musical composition in four movements for a space of any dimensions.
Infinite is an immersive digitally controlled light installation and spatialised musical composition by digital arts group Squidsoup. It generates highly intimate and complex soundscapes from hundreds of individually controlled suspended speakers, each with its own light. Each speaker plays a single note or sound, but with a cluster of speakers each playing different notes, chords emerge – ephemeral, appearing and disappearing cloud-like, sounding and looking different from every listener’s position.
Sit within this unique and delicate space, and be enveloped by these amorphous emerging soundscapes.
A version of Infinite has been acquired by the museum as part of its permanent collection.
Infinite uses any number of orbs, usually between 100 and 700, each containing its own speaker, processor and LEDs, suspended at random heights.
The work is in four movements, currently performed and recorded by Lunar Calendar using violin, viola, cello and double bass. Asked to play the shortest and longest sounds they can produce, together with several octaves plucked and bowed, the results are choreographed into randomised clouds of ever changing chords and harmonies. The results range from sparks and flashes to a long sustained drone. Ambient by nature, the work exploring the overlaps between immersion and atmosphere, the finite and the infinite. The random structure ensures that one will never hear the same sequence twice.
Combined with Infinite Clouds, the work can be presented as both an installation and a performance work.
