INFINITE CLOUDS (2026)

Live Performance within an Immersive Artwork
6 June 2026

SQUIDSOUP // JULZ NGUYEN – LUNAR CALENDAR // NICOLE OLSEN – MOVEMENT CHAOS

SCOTTSDALE MUSEUM of CONTEMPORARY ART (SMoCA)

The idea was to turn Squidsoup’s installation Infinite into a musical instrument and use it as part of a performance.

Working with brilliant violinist Julz Nguyen (Lunar Calendar, the quartet we worked with to create the original sounds for the SMOCA version of the work) and incredible local dance group Nicole Olson Movement Chaos, we created a unique event in two parts: one half was a duet with solo violin (Julz), the other a collaboration with Nicole’s dance group.

Infinite was controlled in real time, creating its usual blend of spatialised clouds and waves of chords and sounds on demand; but in dialogue with the violin or the dancers –  the result was somewhere between improv and planned performance.

The sell-out event was commissioned by Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) as a celebration of their permanent acquisition of Infinite. The work has been on show at SMoCA since June 2025, with the run planned until late August (2026) – a run of well over twelve months.

The performances explored the real-time spatial and narrative possibilities of the Infinite piece, consisting of around 400 suspended speakers and creating a unique series of intimate experiences and encounters between physical space, technology, music and the human body.

Squidsoup – pioneers in the use of light, sound, technology and space to create new kinds of immersive experience. Their work questions our understanding of presence and physicality. They use digitally controlled media to alter and augment physical spaces, to compose perception-altering journeys of the mind. SQDX is an ongoing series of their sonic explorations.

julz (Julian Nguyen) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the possibilities afforded through the combination of sound, sight, and sensation. Alongside Emilio Vazquez (“milz”), he co-founded Lunar Calendar, an immersive arts collective passionate about creating concert experiences where music is seen, heard, and felt. Blending chamber music with contemporary sound and visual design, they offer a new kind of listening experience that is multi-sensory, immersive, and alive.

Nicole L. Olson explores the human condition through movement. The artistic director of the dance company NicoleOlson|MovementChaos, she’s presented work in alternative spaces across the Valley of the Sun for years, performing solo, with her dancers, and with other local artists and creators at places like Phoenix Art Museum, 9 The Gallery in downtown Phoenix, The Heard Museum, the Desert Botanical Garden, and other locales. She has also shown work nationally at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and additional venues in Chicago, Portland, Los Angeles, Austin, Las Vegas, and morz (“milz”) to blend chamber music with stunning visual art and dance performances.e.
