Knife Angel

Light and soundwork reflecting on the consequences of knife crime in Gloucester. A Squidsoup collaboration with Music Works, Gloucester Cathedral and local musicians directly affected by knife crime.

The Knife Angel Project collaboration between Music Works, Squidsoup and young people from the local community to create new audio content in response to the issues highlighted by Knife Angel, a dramatic sculpture made of over 100,000 seized blades, which is currently displayed in Cathedral Green.

The collaboration features the voices and sounds of local young people interested in social change, whose lives have been affected by the issues raised by the Knife Angel sculpture.

This collaboration has been a unique opportunity for local young people to develop their passion for making music and to have their voices and creative ideas occupy a new space, whilst also exploring important issues that impact their lives in powerful and challenging ways.

The launch event featured live performances by several of these amazing artists, and the installation uses poignant quotes, ambient sounds and rhythms drawn from the performance to create a thoughtful, ambient experience building on the consequences and effects of knife crime and violence in Gloucestershire.

Representing the nation’s intolerance and rejection of violence, communities across the country have embraced Knife Angel and all it stands for, with a multitude of towns and cities stepping up to join the list of hosting locations and arranging education workshops, conferences and activities.

Squidsoup, Music Works and Gloucester Cathedral also collaborated in 2020 with local charity GARAS to create Where There is Light, a work highlighting the lives and struggles of refugees and asylum seekers in Gloucestershire. That work was then further developed into a national tour, with funds from Arts Council England.
