State of Mind (2024)

Dive inside the human brain

State of Mind is a site-specific immersive installation that premiered at the Manchester Science Festival.

Created specifically for the historic 1830 Warehouse at the Manchester Science Museum, this large scale work invites audiences to explore the intricate workings of the human brain. The installation offers a vibrant and dynamic audio-visual experience that examines the impact of media on modern life.

Within this sensory-rich environment, visitors are immersed in an abstract and playful representation of the digitised world. The space balances order and chaos through rhythmic patterns of light and sound, saturated with stimuli from evolving media technologies, mirroring the millions of sensory inputs processed by the brain each day.

The experience features audio excerpts from an interview with neuroscientist Professor Adrian Owen of Western University, who shares insights into how the brain adapts to changes in sound and light within its surroundings.

Inspired by the iconic abstract works of Piet Mondrian and building on Squidsoup’s acclaimed Submergence artwork, State of Mind presents a thought-provoking exploration of our media-saturated existence.

State of Mind was exhibited at the 1830 Warehouse, Manchester Science Museum, from 18–27 October 2024, as part of the Manchester Science Festival, featuring audio from neuroscientist Professor Adrian Owen.
